Net Control

Post by G0FEX »

Hi Guys
Sorry to be official, but if in the future I take Net Control, I will not tolerate, people that say do not keep me on, or say I will call in if I require a square, I will call an individual twice, if not there I will take them off my list, the same applies if someone says I will be back in 10 mins, sorry you will be off my list.
Under present circumstances I feel this is the only way to go, in my opinion, your choice you are either on or not, I will appoint a backup net controller, if anyone butts in they will be put to the bottom of the list, again your choice.
This in my opinion seem to be the only way to go in the present climate.

Although I agree with two calls and you are off the list, but there are circumstances where this should be waived. Sometimes it has no sooner got to the bottom of the list than it's running from the top again. What chance do you have if you have a long phone call, people at the door, the wife barging in or you have to go to the bathroom.

Also people critize others for doing this or not doing this on the net when they are just as bad as themselves, the pot calling the kettle black comes to mind.

Like Steve G6TEL I will no longer be on the NETS

The simple answer to my previous message on this forum regarding net control over, if not happy take it on yourself, why always leave it to others, end of story.

I have done my fair share of net control in the past including a 12 hour day running 80 and 40m and helping out on 2m when Dave G4CQR & G3DCZ were in Northern Ireland . In those days there was not all the moaning and groaning about doing net control as there is today.

Amateur radio is a hobby - or so they say!!
So why do so many WAB members treat it as as life or death situation or at the least a 24/7 contest?
Get back to enjoying WAB as a hobby NOT as life or death!!
At least the way it is at the moment you don't have to listen to me as I steer well clear of contests!! :(

I first started collecting WAB squares in 1982 on Top Band with the likes of the late Len Harvey G3ONT running the Nets. It was a very friendly Net where I worked a fair few WAB Squares.

My Amateur Radio activities changed during the 1990's when I ran an AX25 Packet BBS for several years. A change in QTH led to a period of in-activity from the home QTH, my main activity was VHF / UHF Mobile.

In late 2013, I decided to erect a temporary 40M Dipole so that I could rekindle my interest in WAB. Although I have not worked a fantastic number of squares, I am pleased to be able to pick them off as and when time permits.

Due to work commitments, I can not spend as much time as I would like on-air. My job provides some opportunities to work from home and I base myself in the Shack / Office. Obviously if the phone rings I have to provide customer support. During these periods I spend about 90% of my time listening due to the above comments "I will not tolerate, people that say do not keep me on, or say I will call in if I require a square". This statement to me is saying that I am not welcome on the WAB Nets, so I sit and listen rather that be subjected to these comments.

Come on lads don't get upset just cause you had a difficult day. Net control, we know, can be difficult and I wish I could be as efficient as most of the controllers. I'm one of the worst offenders at popping down the bands and working a CW SOTA station when he pops up on the cluster hoping the wab net won't miss me. But all's fair in Love, War and chasing DX, squares, SOTA and what else you fancy. HI. Remember don't take the hobby too seriously. The aurora was visible in our village last night and I was up country visiting family - now that I'm really p....d about.

Damian, It's not quit as simplistic as having a "difficult day". Politics has been slowly creeping into the 7.160 Net Control for several months, culminating in the posting of this thread.

Having read my reply above, do you see my point of view that I will no longer be welcomed on the WAB Net due to my 'modus operandi'?

We now have two prominent WAB Committee Members saying they will no longer join in on the WAB NET, a sad day indeed.

W.A.B. aims to create more activity on the air by British amateurs and in doing so create friendships within the country and overseas.

W.A.B. aims to improve and expand geographical knowledge of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Isles.

David - didn't mean to upset you. I'm sure you''ll be welcome whatever way you collect squares.

Net control is difficult and there's a need to listen out more.

I'm in agreement with Ken, too many decide to leave for lunch etc and just return to the list. There is also the awkward moment type of miss, the door rings, the phone rings, etc etc. It's so hard to know as a controller what is best to do. However, there are guidelines to follow and two calls is usually enough to cope with in a busy net.

I'm no longer active on the net and square collecting. I left the Yahoo reflector after some comments from other members.
I've decided that things have deteriated lately to the point where I received rude emails about my activity that it just wasn't worth the aggro. I've also suspended trig pointing although I'm still working on my portable rebox just in case I feel like it.
