G4WAB/P

Post by G4cqrdave »

I HAVE BEEN LICENSED FOR OVER 45 YEARS, AND I HAVE NOT WORKED A STATION BEFORE OPERATING FROM A HOME USING MAINS POWER, USING THE /P PREFIX

SO I WENT TO THE LICENSING ON THE OFCOM WEB SITE LOOKED AT THE LICENSE CONDITIONS AND IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT /A SHOULD BE USED, BELOW IS WHAT I FOUND

IF THE LICENSEE OPERATES THE RADIO EQUIPMENT AT A ALTERNETIVE ADDRESS THE LICENSEE MAY USE THE SUFFIX /A WITH THE CALL

THE DEFINITION OF ALTERNATIVE ADDRESS IS ALTERNATIVE ADDRESS MEANS A FIXED POSTAL ADDRESS IN THE U.K. OTHER THAN THE MAIN ADDRESS

IF THE LICENSEE OPERATES THE EQUIPMENTAT A TEMPORY LOCATION THE LICENSEE MAY USE THE SUFFIX /P WITH THE CALLSIGN

THE DEFINITION OF TEMPORY LOCATION MEANS A FIXED LOCATION IN THE U. K. WHICH IS NOT THE MAIN ADDRESS OR A TEMPORY LOCATION

THE DEFINITIONS FOUND ON PAGE 11, THE RULES FOUND ON PAGE 14 OF THE LICENSE CONDITIONS

THIS TO ME MEANS IF YOU ARE WORKING FROM A FIXED LOCATION WITH A POSTAL ADDRESS WHICH OF COURSE IS THE CASE FOR G4WAB THEN /A SHOULD BE USED

ANY COMMENTS I THOUGHT AS A CLUB WE SHOULD GET IT RIGHT

I would have thought that /A would be more appropriate than /P

It really doesn't matter.

The licence says "may", not "must". You don't have to use one at all!

I agree with the above comments the use of /a is useful to tell the station you work that you are not at the address that is in the
callbook.
so as the call g4/g7wab are club calls with no fixed address /a is not of any use

Having recently gone through the rigmarole of having to re-learn the licence conditions, I have a lot of sympathy with the opening post of this thread.

Yes, you may (optionally) use /A when operating at an Alternative Address (as defined)
Yes, you may (optionally) use /P when operating at an Temporary Address (as defined)

However, strictly speaking, using /P from an ALternative Address (as defined) is NOT permitted

{corrected, as spotted by G4IAR}

Did you get this round your neck, Andy? You said:

"Yes, you may (optionally) use /P when operating at an Temporary Address (as defined)"

and then said the opposite

"However, strictly speaking, using /P from a Temporary Address (as defined) is NOT permitted". :-)

I think you meant "However, strictly speaking, using /P from an Alternative Address (as defined) is NOT permitted.

Just to stir it a bit further, whilst the licence says you may use these suffixes, (but don't have to), by the same token it does not say that using /P is not permitted from an alternative address. Whilst it's not a recommended suffix, there is nothing to say you can't. Likewise it doesn't say you can't use non-existent suffixes such as /QRP, /LH etc.!

AS A CLUB WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE THE USE OF /A WHEN NOT AT YOUR HOME QTH
WE USE QRZ OR THE CALLBOOK TO FIND THE WAB SQUARES FROM THE ADDRESS LISTED
WHEN WORKING STATIONS IN CONTESTS YOU CANNOT ASK FOR THE WAB LOCATOR SO IT IS COMMOM PRACTICE TO LOOK UP THE ADDRESS
ON QRZ OR CALLBOOK AND WORK OUT THE WAB. FROM WHAT YOU ARE SAYING THIS PRACTICE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED AS THE STATION
YOU WORK COULD BE ANYWHERE

It defines when you MAY use it (optionally)...

If a suffix is to be used, we should use the correct suffixes

Likewise it would confuse members no end if a mobile station stopped signing /mobile... people would probably assume the Home Square

They could indeed. I know of a few within a local club who do not necessarily work from their own QTH in the RSGB 80m CC and don't use a suffix, I dare say it applies to more than this contest. To stick /A or whatever on the end of their callsign when they don't have to would only slow things down. I'm not saying the practice of working out a WAB square shouldn't be allowed, but anyone doing so should be aware of this and be very, careful.

PS - Dave - any chance you could not post in all upper case, please. It makes the posts difficult to read and whilst I do not take it as such in this instance, it can be considered as shouting.
