WAB callsigns in 2019

I have had several enquiries regarding the use of WAB callsigns in 2019, especially with regards to GB50WAB.

GB50WAB is the only special event callsign that WAB as a group is running. It is in fact designated by OFCOM as a “Special Special Event” callsign. For this reason, it is not simply a case of applying for it and getting it, especially as we would like to run it for a full year, rather than the usual 28 days.

Negotiations are still on-going with OFCOM as to whether we can run it for a full year and as to how the operating periods will be split up. Please be patient with us and bear in mind that when we had GB40WAB in 2009, OFCOM only permitted the committee to hold the call. This was not our choice.

When things are finally, (hopefully), sorted, it will not be myself who is responsible for allocation of operating periods, but the Hon. Secretary, Geoff, G7GJU, as the licence holder, who is currently in frequent contact with OFCOM.

IF we get it for a full year AND OFCOM allow members to use it, we will endeavour to find a fair way to allocate its use. In the meantime, please be patient and wait until we know exactly what the situation is. We cannot take any prior bookings.

Regarding Gx4WAB and Gx7WAB, these are always available for members to use by asking the licence holders, Geoff, G7GJU and Kevin, G0AKH, respectively. For 2019, if we follow the system used in 2009, I will coordinate the use of these and a calendar will be posted on the website. Each will be available for 365 days next year, so I’m sure you’ll be able to get a turn!

Please remember that all of these calls may only be used by full licensees. (OFCOM rules!).

I am now taking requests for the use of the WAB club callsigns of G4WAB and G7WAB during 2019. The allocation will be on a first come, first served basis.

Please use the Regional Secondary Locator relevant to the club call (GX, GS, GT etc.).

You must be a member of WAB in order to use a club call and licensing regulations dictate that only full licencees may use these calls.

Working the club stations is part of one of the awards for our 50th Anniversary, so please feel free to come on the nets with the call. Also, please remember that one of the ideas behind the use of the callsigns is to promote WAB, so we would ask that you don’t hide away exclusively on non-chat modes such as FT8.

To book your dates, please drop me an email at: g4iar@worked-all-britain.org.uk

The calendars with dates already booked can be viewed at:

I hope to have some news regarding GB50WAB in a few days time.

Just going to raise this up again. Working these callsigns each month is an integral part of one of the awards. You will be assisting the other members by taking one on, even if just for a few days. So far no one has volunteered for G4WAB in January. Given the current band conditions, you should ideally be able to poke out a bit of a signal on 80m.
