Contest Scoring Examples   Page Last Updated: 09 Jun 2006

Below we have a log sheet of 10 contacts with the information that is required for a good contact:

1227 G9TBL 59.010 59.001 SE11 CAL or Calderdale UA 5 2
TOTAL   45 20

  • OK you have worked 10 stations, so first we check for duplicate contacts, as stations only count once per band for QSO points.

  • In a multi band contest, score each band as a separate contest and total them together at the end for your total score.

  • We have two contacts with GW9XXX/M (004 and 006). There are NO QSO points for the second contact.
    The contact with EI43TBF (008) is with a station outside of Britain, but still counts for QSO points.

  • Now for the bit that seems to confuse many. Turn to your CHECK SHEET and start with your first contact. Under County/UA enter WAL or Walsall UA and in the slot below enter SO99.

  • For the next contact (002), enter FIF or Fife UA in the next County/UA heading and NS98 in the slot below. Do this all down your log and you should finish up with ALL the W.A.B. Areas you have worked on the check sheet.

County/UA County/UA County/UA County/UA
WAL FIF KIR GWY
SO99   NS98   SE11   SH33
SO99           SH34

County/UA County/UA County/UA County/UA
RIE IOM CAL
TA06   SC27   SE11

DXCC  G - GM - GW - GD - EI

  • You will find that you will work some County/UAs and W.A.B. Areas more than once. Don't enter the County/UA again but do enter the AREA, marking the duplicates, as second contacts do not count for multipiers.

  • You will see that contact 004 and 006 are in the same UA, so enter the second contact area under the first (e.g. SH33 and SH34) under Gwynedd UA.

  • Now you will also see that you have worked SE11 in two different UAs - both count - see KIR and CAL.

  • Last but not least you have worked SO99 twice (001 and 009). Enter both and mark the second one as a duplicate area. The second one does not count for multiplier points.

  • When you have completed the check sheet, you should have the same total of areas on your check sheet that you have on your log sheet. Now highlight the duplicate areas and total the County/UAs + Areas + DXCC Countries worked and you have the total of multipiers.

In this case: County/UAs = 7
  Areas = 8
  DXCC Countries = 5
  TOTAL = 20
  • For the final score, multiply the total number of QSO points by the total number of Multipliers:
    45 x 20 = 900 points

  • Please don't forget to complete your Contest Summary Sheet, and if you have an e-mail address include this, so I can confirm your entry has been received.
